Abstract:

The NIST Interagency Report 7628 was developed by the SGIP CyberSecurity Working Group to provide guidance for smart grid cyber security for electric utilities, vendors, manufacturers, researchers, and IT and communications industry players, as well as state and government regulators. The NISTIR provides guidance to each of these stakeholders when addressing cyber security issues for the smart grid. This discussion of the NISTIR 7628 will provide an overview of each section, and provide attendees with an opportunity to ask specific questions about the document’s contents.

The NISTIR inside view includes a smart grid cyber security strategy, a high-level logical security architecture, and a bottom-up security analysis, as well as discussions of privacy, cryptography, vulnerabilities, security requirements, and future themes for research and development. As the document consists of three volumes, the presentation will give the viewer direction to find the information that is relevant to an individual or organization. Also included in the discussion are some of the anecdotes and use cases that were considered as part of the analyses.

The talk will be given jointly by Alan Greenberg and Mark Enstrom.

About the TCIPG Seminar Series:

The seminar series is presented by the Trustworthy Cyber Infrastructure for the Power Grid (TCIPG) Project, an $18 million multi-university research effort whose partner institutions include the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Arizona State University, Dartmouth, and Washington State University. The TCIPG Project, a successor to the earlier NSF-funded TCIP Center, was founded in 2009 with support from the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It is housed in the Information Trust Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
